Statement

"Paula Cahill: Flash Solo" introduces an exclusive selection of 15 paintings, all new to Artsy. Paintings range in scale, medium, and price but are all coherent in the use of dynamic line as the primary vehicle of communication.

Press Release

"Line is everything. Extending infinitely to the past and future, line forms the basis of our realities." This exclusive selection of 15 paintings collective describe the ranges of how Paula Cahill's linear abstract compositions are often comprised of a single, luminous line that meanders, changes color, and seamlessly connects back to itself. As Cahill prepares to paint, she mixes up to 100 gradients of color derived from her memories of scuba diving among tropical fish on the worldʼs coral reefs. By repeatedly laying down the colorful gradients one brushstroke at a time, Cahill's radiant, light-filled lines change color hundreds of times, reflecting a quality reminiscent of the bioluminescence that emanates from sea-life. Cahill's work is interactive, inviting the viewer to track a meandering, color-changing path.

Cahill pushes the historical conversation with line into the contemporary, striving to elevate the integral role it has played in art, design, and the sciences since its early appearance in rock and cave drawings. Geometry, personal experience, visual semantics, and art history all inform Cahill’s work. Her most recent works give a nod to Diego Velazquez, Pablo Picasso, Egyptian art, and Renaissance perspective.
